Summer is in full swing; therefore, it is a fun time to learn how to enjoy the sun without suffering the consequences. Firstly, there are some key elements that cultivate healthy vibrant skin deep into the summer months. Secondly, it takes little effort to implement these tips to enhance your summer glow. You are worth it! You might feel the sun taking a toll on your skin in the shape of dry tight dehydrated skin. This can cause your skin to look prematurely aged and no one wants that. Here are some fun tips to help you move through summer glowing and enjoying the new season!

Hydration builds skin health and is remarkable for creating inward and outward radiance. You are familiar with the fact that the human body contains over 60% water. Most of us experience elevated levels of dehydration frequently, especially in the summer! It is just as important to hydrate the outer layers of our skin as it is to hydrate our internal bodies. We can easily improve the health and appearance of our skin by infusing it with hydration.
An effortless way to stay hydrated is to infuse your water with cucumber or grab some organic coconut water. Coconut water hydrates 3 times as much as regular water and can replenish the body with much-needed electrolytes. Plus, it is a tasty way to enjoy a refreshing drink without all the added sugar! Try filling up your water bottle in the morning with a freshly cut cucumber and taste the benefits of a hydrated body. This internal hydration will show up on your outward radiance and is worth the effort to be healthy!
HydraFacial Summer trend and benefits. After you spend time internally hydrating next you can focus on your external skin needs. There is a new trend in hydration and exfoliation that is utilized by HydraFacial’s and is an excellent way to simultaneously hydrate and slough off old skin. Hydra dermabrasion utilizes the natural healing powers of water and oxygen to effortlessly exfoliate the skin, without the use of hard crystals or abrasive textured wands. As a result, the skin is deeply hydrated and protected.

HydraFacials restore your skin to its healthiest state by removing impurities and replenishing your skin. First off, it infuses the skin with essential nutrients. Second, it extracts impurities and dead skin cells. And lastly, it hydrates the skin at a deep derma level. Creating a magic mixture of skin rejuvenation that is felt immediately. You will experience long-term benefits without downtime or irritation. How does this benefit your summer skin? You will immediately reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles leaving you feeling fabulous for those scorching summer nights.

CBD not only is useful for an array of physical and emotional needs it is excellent for rejuvenating the vibrant nature of the derma layers. One of CBD’s superpowers is that it combats oxidative stress and protects against free radical damage. Free radicals are like rogue cells that steal from healthy ones and can leave your skin looking sluggish and haggard. CBD shows potential to slow down the aging process by stimulating collagen production, the natural elasticity builder of the body. It also acts as a protective agent against damage from inflammation and free radicals. Find a Spa that specializes in CBD facials and that use organic ingredients!

Add facial massage to your skincare routine. Glowing skin and contoured facial features create a recipe for natural beauty and confidence. Your summer skincare routine is enhanced by proper hydration, sleep, and regular facials. However, there is a lesser-known, highly effective tool for glowing skin that most people do not know!
A facial massage can be performed in a variety of ways: with your bare hands, a warm washcloth, a jade roller, ice globes, salt stones, or a growing variety of patented face massage tools. Simply, apply your favorite hydrating facial oil to your skin and then with an upwards motion, massage away! You will combat facial bloat, stimulate collagen production, decrease fine lines, improve circulation, and unleash beauty producing lymphatic drainage. The result, a contoured face and plump skin.

There is no use fighting the summer sun. It is best to embrace its healing powers. We highly recommend enjoying the natural sun this summer. The benefits of sunbathing are vast, including:
Builds the immune system, lowers depression, decreases skin irritations such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis, cleanses and oxygenates the blood and increases circulation and do not forget about the all-important vitamin D production!

Chances are your summer adventures may lead to overexposure. When this occurs do not fret here are some useful tips on how to naturally heal a sunburn:
Aloe Vera is well known and has been used for ages to restore and soothe a sunburn. Hydration, essential oils, and facials will help you stay fresh and new all summer long. Essential oils can help with both the burn inflammation and repairing your skin quickly. By now most homes have the gem of essential oils somewhere in the cabinet. If you are experiencing the discomfort of a sunburn Peppermint oil cools and relieves pain quickly.
Simply combine 20-30 drops of peppermint oil in 2-4 ounces of water in a glass spray bottle and mix with a pinch of sea salt. It is important to use glass due to the corrosive nature of plastic, you do not want your oils to combine with plastic toxins! Mist the peppermint tonic onto the sunburn and enjoy its cooling, painkilling effect! Lavender and frankincense are also helpful in repairing sun-damaged skin.
We hope these tips make it easier for you to fully embrace the summer season! Here at Zama, we have HydraFacial's’ CBD facials, Ice globe and Salt stone Facials! We have a variety for you because we know each person's needs are different and you deserve a plethora of high-grade facials to choose from.

Meditation is a hot topic in our culture. High-stress environments reveal the importance of mindfulness; therefore, the benefits are immense and applicable to many lifestyles. This form of concentration and healing has been used for thousands of years in countless cultures across the globe. In addition, people find meditation as a valid tool to relieve tension in the mind, body and spirit. With countless options and different styles of meditation, it can be challenging to find the right fit for you. We are going to look at the clear benefits of this ancient practice and discover the styles that best suit your needs.
First off, it’s important to understand why we should meditate. Meditation induces a deep sense of calm, not only for the mind but the nervous system as well. In case studies there have been many proven benefits of meditation. These include stress reduction, decreased anxiety, increased
emotional health and stability, enhanced self-awareness and in turn awareness of others. Meditation can lengthen attention span, fight addiction, aid in memory loss, improve sleep, help control pain and reduce blood pressure. The greatest asset of meditation is it requires no special equipment. It is accessible anywhere at any time. In turn, its benefits aren't limited by social or economic status. Meditation can add great value to anyone’s existence.
There are many forms of meditation. The overall goal and underlying power of this practice is to reveal the ability one has to return to homeostasis. Meditation brings you back to your center. It reveals that the center of our beings is intrinsically peaceful. When we focus our attention, we remember that the core of our being is at ease. Therefore, we have the ability in any circumstance to return to our natural state of calm. By reconnecting to self, we can find balance in any situation.
The English word “meditation” stems from meditatum, a Latin word meaning to “ponder.” The earliest records of meditation practice date from approximately 1500 yrs. BCE. It has been an integral component of the earliest forms of the Vedic, schools of India. In turn, Chinese Taoists and Indian Buddhist traditions also developed their own versions of meditation. Next, the west formed their meditation practices as well. Meditation was used by such notable figures as The Desert Fathers of the Middle East, Jesus of Nazareth and Saint Augustine. The art of meditation has been used by many spiritual leaders in the past. It continues its reach into our modern-day culture. Meditation is an ancient practice used today in a similar way as massage therapy or acupuncture.
Originates from Buddhist techniques and is the most popular style of meditation in the West. Not only does this technique teach focus but it brings awareness to the patterns of the mind.
You are encouraged to pay attention to the thoughts that pass through the mind without judgment. There is a strong focus on not trying to “fix” anything. Simply become an observer of the mind to enhance connection and awareness. Through this focused observation, it's easier to detach from pesky thoughts. This style is suitable without a teacher and is easiest to practice alone.
This type of meditation is often used in Eastern religions such as Hinduism, Daoism and Christianity. In the Western world, many forms of spiritual paths use meditation as a path to enlightenment. Furthermore, spiritual meditation is used to connect to the Universe or God as interpreted by you. The goal of this kind of meditation is to connect to a higher power and understand that connection through silence and a calming of the mind. Many find that when they quiet the mind and spirit,
they are able to access their inner truth and let go of what may trouble them. This practice is an asset to those seeking spiritual growth and is completely unique to the individual.
Enhances concentration and the use of the 5 senses. As a result, this practice is very popular. First, you can focus on something internal like breath or yourheartbeat. Second practice noticing all the sensations you are experiencing. How does the earth under your body feel? Is the air hot or cool? Third, are there sounds in the room? Hyperfocus and awareness can calm down the nervous system and bring you into the present moment. This type of practice is very helpful for people who struggle with anxiety.
It can be useful to find a guide to help you meditate. Consequently, health practitioners and energy workers have found a place in the world of meditation to help others. This type of meditation can include visualization, color therapy and sound therapy. Finding someone you trust to take you into a state of peace is important. Guided meditation is a great option for those wanting to take their meditation practice to a deeper level. With the help of a guide, it may be easier to release deep levels of tension or trauma.
Find a quiet place where you feel comfortable, you may sit or lay down whatever feels best to you. Allow time for yourself without interruptions to explore breath and focused awareness. Make your space
beautiful with things that bring you comfort and bring you joy. You might find it easiest to meditate in nature. Nature provides ample resources of natural sounds and sights for the mind to connect to. Remember there is no right or wrong way to meditate. You get to choose how you focus and what brings you back to a deeper sense of self. Likewise, some find movement meditation to be useful. Yoga, earthing, gardening, walking and dancing all fall into this category.
Whatever form of meditation piques your interest is the one you should explore. Equally important is knowing that you have everything you need within you to find peace. Awareness brings about a sense of wellness and connection that enhances your life experience. Remember you are safe in your own body and need not search elsewhere. Lastly, a day at the Spa can also bring you into a state of internal and external peace.

Myofascial release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique offered in deep tissue, Ashiatsu or cupping massage. This technique includes gentle to deep sustained pressure, which is applied to the myofascial connective tissue in problem areas. Myofascial release can help eliminate pain immediately and helps to restore mobility and flexibility.
Fascia, or myofascial connective tissue, is a densely woven tissue that covers, interpenetrates and connects every part of the body. This continuous, uninterrupted web connects and supports every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and
vein. It also surrounds and connects the internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord.
Injury, inflammation, surgical procedures and repetitive strains can all create myofascial restrictions. These limit movement, inhibit circulation and cause pain. Recent studies have shown that myofascial restrictions can produce tensile pressures of up to 2,000 pounds per square inch. It's easy to imagine how internal tension like that can affect our overall sense of well-being and ability to function.
In addition, fascia acts like a communication network. Fascia has sensory
receptors that transmit information to the brain as your body moves through time and space. Healthy fascia provides information to the brain more efficiently and effectively. Newer research highlights the importance of keeping fascia healthy and its powerful role in your overall health. Fascia stores energy and renews energy during dynamic movement. In short, caring for the health and strength of your fascia can improve not only physical conditioning but mental processing as well.
The goal of myofascial therapy is to stretch and loosen the fascia so that it and the surrounding structures can move more freely. This restores movement and decreases or eliminates pain. Myofascial Release provides a wonderful approach to therapeutic bodywork. It's profound relief for chronic tension, pain and restricted movement is extremely helpful and liberating. Our staff here at Zama are rigorously trained in myofascial release, as it is the critical ingredient to transforming and providing pain relief in fascia. Deep Tissue Massage, Ashiatsu and cupping all incorporate myofascial release techniques.
Foam rollers are a powerful at-home wellness tool!In addition to seeing a professional therapist to provide myofascial release, you can utilize trigger point balls and foam rollers at home! In fact, here at Zama, our therapists are trained to provide at-home instructions for myofascial release so that you can access the most benefit from your massage! Your body would benefit from a daily foam rolling session, it's like giving yourself a massage! This can be transformative in your self care routine and help keep pain at bay.
The hands-on technique of myofascial release therapy involves applying gentle, sustained pressure to the myofascial tissue. This slow, focused and deep therapy allows the restricted tissue to elongate and release. This relieves pain and restores flexibility and movement. The techniques are performed directly on the skin, usually with light oil or cream or none at all. This enables the therapist to accurately detect fascial restrictions and apply the appropriate amount of sustained pressure to facilitate release.

Does it hurt to stand or sit? Experiencing painful tingling, numbness, or radiating sharp pain down your backside? Does this nagging pain seem unstoppable? Sciatica may be what is ailing you.
What is sciatica or sciatic nerve pain?Sciatica is common. 40% of us have experienced it at some point. Many are unaware that this common “back pain” is caused when the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the human body, is irritated or pinched.
Sciatica is often caused by a compression or bulge in the lumber spine. Spinal injuries and degeneration, issues with the sacroiliac joint, and tightness of the piriformis muscle are other causes of sciatica.
The sciatic nerve branches from your lower back to your hips, buttock and down both legs. It is most common for someone to only experience pain radiating down one side of the body and not both at the same time. The pain you may experience will most often feel like a pain in your low back to buttock area which will radiate down the hip into your legs and may feel like a sharp stabbing, burning or a throbbing that can also create numbness or tingling in the legs and feet. Many people may feel weak or have difficulty moving their leg. This pain can be a constant or shooting pain that may come and go throughout the day.
Who is at risk for sciatica?
Those who have postural issues, diabetes, sit for prolonged periods, and lift large loads are most likely suffer from this painful condition. Women often experience this condition during pregnancy due to pressure being created on the sciatic nerve from the developing uterus.
How can we prevent ourselves from experiencing sciatica?
Forming these daily habits can help you and keep you in the best possible physical condition to avoid sciatica:
How can we relieve sciatic pain?
The upside of sciatic nerve pain is that 80%-90% of people heal with time and rest without prescriptions or surgery. Although this condition can heal on its own, there are many natural ways that we can treat sciatica ourselves.

You may not realize it, but there are a few tricks to getting the most from a facial. We want to acquaint you with the art of receiving a facial so that you can feel beautiful for longer. Follow these top 7 tips and look younger and alive with fresh healthy skin!
1. First, let's book your facial the right way.
This may seem obvious, but getting started is often the hardest part. Seriously, your skin likely needs it and you are worth it. It is important not to feel intimidated!
Our professional estheticians are here to seamlessly guide you to the right treatment for your unique skin. You will be given the opportunity to answer many questions about your skin. We use a variety of facials for different skin types and we can customize your treatment.
When booking it is helpful to share 3 specific concerns about your skin with your spa concierge when you book. This will help you to ensure that the specific facial that will meet your goals.
Also, timing is extremely important when it comes to facials. The rule of thumb is to book your facial 4 - 7 days before a special event. Having a facial just before an event may seem like a great idea but if you are a new-to-facials client, your first treatment may be followed by breakouts before you get the radiant facial look. It is important to keep in mind that a week from your facial you will experience the peak of that wonderful glow you hear about.
2. Always prepare for your facial.
You want the best possible benefits from your appointment, right!? This one may be hard to hear, but keep your face out of the sun! Going into a facial with a sun burn can result in you being sent home and being told to come back in a week to avoid further damage. Sun damage can cause your skin to become fragile and sensitive, making it unsafe to have a treatment.
Definitely do not plan to have a wax on the same day of your facial. Waxing will leave the skin incredibly sensitive and expose a new layer of skin cells. This will likely be to much for the sensitive skin on your face.
3. Relax and arrive early the day of your facial.
Here at Zama Massage Therapeutic Spa we always request our clients to arrive 10 - 15 minutes early just to allow time to sit back and relax and enjoy a cup of tea. Entering your session with a clear, relaxed state of mind will allow you to think of all the questions you've been building up to this point to ask your esthetician. Don't be afraid to be honest about your current skin regimen and what your biggest concerns are. Your esthetician is there to educate and help you reach your skin goals!
4. What you need to know about extractions.
Extractions are the bittersweet, but mostly sweet part, of receiving facials. Extractions are vital for removing blackheads, whiteheads and pimples to achieve clear, smooth skin. Our estheticians are trained to know when and when not to extract from a pore. Steam allows the pores to open up, which helps with the extractions.
It is important to prepare yourself mentally as extractions can be a bit painful. It is important to remember to be honest and be comfortable telling your esthetician if the discomfort is too much. Extractions are a large part of what heals and improves your skin, giving it a rested and healthy glow!
5. What happens after the facial?
You may be a bit of a rosy color, which will go away within a couple hours. You can apply makeup right away if you need to, however we encourage you to reap the benefits of the facial products. Allow the skin to breathe and soak in the specific products used on your skin.
6. How often are facials necessary?
Depending on your type of skin, your esthetician will make a recommendation. We generally encourage about every 4 - 6 weeks. This allows you to keep up on the extractions, which in turn allows the pores to continually shrink. Your skin the
n restores to the wonderful and youthful glow we all desire.
If you have hyperpigmentation or breakouts, you'll most likely want to experience a series of facials and follow up with an at home regimen. Your at home regime is crucial to encourage longevity of the benefits you received from your appointment and also benefit effectiveness of all future facials.
At the end of your facial your esthetician will provide you with information about your skin, give you suggestions on products, and give you information on how you should plan your facial regime for the future.
7. Booking a facial at Zama Massage Therapeutic Spa is made easy for you!
We offer a completely custom facial at no extra cost. The Organic Custom Facial is our top requested facial, we make it custom to make your booking process simple. Learn more about this service.
Book your facial HERE or call 503-281-0278 for more information.

At Zama we use moist heat clay packs that soak in water that is around 115 degrees. They are placed on the affected area of the body between a towel to control the level of heat administered. They retain their heat for up to 45 minutes and these packs can be used on virtually any part of the body.
Heat therapy should be applied no longer than 10-15 minutes at a time unless otherwise directed by a doctor.
Moist Heat Packs:
You can use hot packs at home for relief as well. If you don’t already have your own hot packs, we recommend our reusable Hotshotz brand hot packs.
Cold therapy, ice packs
The use of cold therapy, or ice, is very common. Ice is often used to help reduce swelling or inflammation associated with injuries.
Cold therapy should be limited to applications that last no longer than 5-10 minutes at a time and up to 30 minutes in any given hour, unless otherwise directed by a doctor.
Cold therapy:
Cold therapy at home is an easy solution for acute pain relief and ideal after a good deep tissue massage to help reduce soreness. Freezing water in a paper cup is a great way to create your own ice wand that you can easily hold. As the ice melts, simply tear back the paper as the ice melts.
Contrast therapy, the best of both worlds.
Contrast hydrotherapy is when you use both hot and cold therapy on the same part of the body. The cold pushes the blood and lymph out and the heat brings the blood and lymph back, essentially helping to create a pumping action which increases the flow of blood. In some cases, contrast therapy can restore blood flow back to normal in a previously injured area.
Contrast therapy starts with cold for 5-10 minutes and than moves to heat for 5-10 minutes. This can be repeated 2-3 times per hour, or as otherwise directed by a doctor.
Contrast Therapy:
There is a form of hydrotherapy for everyone. Ask your therapist about their recommendation and how it could benefit you.

With the Shamrock Run right around the corner, we decided a post about stretching for runners would be valuable. So we asked Eric Hanson, our lead massage therapist, what he would suggest. Here is what he said.
Great stretches for runners include:
Repeat each stretch 1-2 times on both the left and right side and hold them for 15-30 seconds. Also, be sure to use deep breaths to aid your stretching routine.
As with all stretches, only do the ones you feel comfortable with and that don’t cause you pain. If you feel adverse pain while stretching, stop; do not do stretches that hurt your body. If you have further questions about stretching or more advanced moves contact your local Yoga professional or Physical Therapist.

Valentines Day brings to mind roses, love, intimacy and of course, chocolate! This month at Zama Massage Therapeutic Day Spa we have created a beautiful service in our esthetic’s department that incorporates these special elements. Let’s take a moment to explore some of the benefits that make this service such a decadent treat for your body, mind and spirit:
Rose: A beneficial ingredient for dry, sensitive or aging skin types. Rose has a gentle toning and soothing effect on the capillaries just below the skin’s surface, which makes it useful in diminishing and calming redness or inflammation.
Chocolate: Cocoa not only helps to reduce our stress hormones, it is also a wonderful antioxidant that helps protect your skin from UV damage and promote circulation. In our February facial special warm cocoa butter will be used in the massage of the neck, shoulders, arms and hands. Expect your senses to be tantalized!
Massage: Massage therapy has the ability to bring healing to our bodies. The concepts and benefits of massage are associated with the larger muscles in the body such as our backs, hips, legs, neck, shoulders, etc. Massage is also beneficial and healing to our face and skin as well. Some of the many benefits of facial massage include 1) stimulating circulation and blood flow, 2) increasing oxygen, 3) releasing toxins trapped between tissues and muscles, 4) relaxing nerves and muscles, 5) increasing lymphatic flow and 6) hydrating the skin by helping nutrients penetrate to a deeper layer of the skin. Every single one of these benefits result in a smoother, healthier looking complexion.
Deep Breathing: Breathing is an essential part of living. Think about it, breathing is literally life! Too often our breathing becomes shallow due to busy, stressful schedules. We may not even realize that we are not breathing deeply anymore. There are wonderful health benefits to taking even just a few moments to focus on deep breathing such as: 1) releasing tension, 2) relieving pain, 3) relaxing the mind and body, 4) bringing clarity, 5) strengthening the immune system, 6) and even elevating moods. Deep breathing can bring us into the present moment, allowing us to be more fully aware of what we are experiencing and feeling.
So whether you are coming in with your special loved one this Valentines Day for a couples date night, or coming in on your own as you embrace the beautiful gift of loving and caring for yourself… Zama would love to be your Valentine!
Valentine's Day offers us a unique opportunity to undertake a new perspective on how we choose to celebrate love. The traditional approach with flowers, cards, and romance works beautifully for some. For others, a display of love toward children, parents, or friends can be equally rewarding. But in the midst of all the various means of displaying love to others, let us not forget the benefits of looking after our own needs. This Valentine’s Day, offer yourself the same thing you give to all of the loved ones in your life, and make the effort to show yourself a little love!
Celebrate your LOVE all month long!

The New Year brings a renewed commitment to better health. Whether you are just starting an exercise routine or ramping up your winter training, these 5 tips will help you reach your over all wellness and performance goals.
1) Start slow. Starting a new routine can be both challenging, and dangerous. Be sure to use the proper equipment and get the support you need.
2) Stay hydrated. Aim to drink at least half of your body weight in ounces (more when exercising hard) to keep your body functioning at optimal levels.
3) Create a budget for self care. To run your best you must be at your best, but you can't get there without proper self care. Plan to get a massage every 3-5 weeks during your heaviest training periods. Massage increases how fast you recover and will in turn help you reach your goals faster.
4) Know your tools:
5) Soak in Epsom salt baths. Taking a Epsom salt bath 2-3 times per week relaxes and helps the body shed toxins that build up during exercise.

Intended Skin Type: All Skin Types
Purpose: Wrinkle smoothing serum made with Hyaluronic Acid, Blue Green Algae & other oils and extracts that help your skin increase collagen, and boost elastin for optimal skin health.
How it works: Hyaluronic Acid occurs naturally in the deeper layers of our skin (the dermis). It helps to keep skin smooth and "plump" through its ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Nicknamed "the fountain of youth", HA plays a critical role in tissue repair. As we age, our bodies produce less HA causing wrinkles, and sagging. This form of Natural HA, penetrates into the tissue, softening lines, reducing sagging appearance. HA also protects the epidermis by scavenging reactive oxygen species generated by ultra violet light which would normally cause sunspots. HA also provides the perfect carrier for delivering other nutrients to the skin, and Moxie Organix has included several in our ingredient list. HA also protects the epidermis by scavenging reactive oxygen species generated by ultra violet light which would normally cause sunspots.
What’s in it? Blue Green Algae: full spectrum of minerals, chlorophyll, B Vitamins, Beta-Carotene, Pro Vitamin A, Lipids, active enzymes, essential amino acids, nucleic acids, DHA and EPA fatty acids. DMAE: (Fruit Acid) skin & pore tightening, essential fatty acid. Sea Buckthorn Oil: Anti inflammatory, healing. Evening Primrose Oil: rich source of gamma linoleic acid, an Omega 6 fatty acid, anti-oxidant. Alpha Lipoic Acid: neutralizes free radicals, directly recycles and extends the metabolic lifespan of vitamin C and Coenzyme Q10, and it indirectly renews vitamin E. MSM: feeds the formation of collagen and elastin while preventing and reducing cross-linking between cells, which is the primary cause of wrinkles and scar tissue Meadowfoam Seed Oil: Reduces wrinkles and signs of aging.
For 30 minutes, your body will be enveloped in the gentle warmth of our Far-Infrared Body Wrap. The 2013 Holiday Season is in full swing. This means ample amounts of activity, invitations to parties, time with family, gift giving, eating, drinking and being merry. It can also mean less sleep, and more stress.
Here are 5 things you can do to stay sane this season:
Plan Ahead: Thinking ahead will help you streamline your efforts and help you feel less harried! Knowing what you can do NOW, and what can wait, will make these next 12 days much more enjoyable.
Every year, around the holiday’s I make a calendar that outlines all of my commitments (including my partner’s, children’s, extended family and work/travel commitments) which gives me a bird’s eye view of what lies ahead. This helps me get clear about where I want to put my energy and also where I don’t.
Once I have the lay of the land outlined, I start thinking about what I need to accomplish, and by when, so I can then create a to-do list that is broken down by project on my timeline. Is there anything I can do now to save time, resources and energy three weeks from now? Start doing the things that seem urgent, then leave the rest for a later date.
Delegate: There is nothing more powerful than freeing your time of the things you simply don’t want to do. Seriously, give yourself permission to get them off your plate. What can you ask someone else to do for you? Yes, I do mean actually asking for help.
Say NO: This is the season for Giving - However, giving to the point of exhaustion or overwhelm is not going to serve anyone. Go back to your calendar and look at the things you absolute do not want to miss -- not out of obligation, but because those things fill your cup and make you feel good -- then, say NO to the rest. Setting healthy boundaries and giving yourself permission to have an out when you need one is key to finding balance this season.
Be Mindful & Keep Breathing (Deeply): It seems simple, and yet so many of us forget the healing benefits of conscious, deep breathing. I often suggest to my clients to plant their feet firmly on the floor, and then imagine a long string in the center of their heads pulling them up, ever so slightly toward the heavens, until their spine is straight. Then with one hand over their heart and one on their lower abdomen, I encourage them to take 3-5 long slow deep breaths. Usually, by the 3rd-5th one, they have started to relax and notice the tension they feel starting to dissipate. Adding a few drops of vanilla or lavender aromatherapy to the inside of your wrists or the side of your neck brings added relief and helps your entire nervous system calm down.
Make Time For Self Care: Going back to the basics is an easy way to keep stress at bay during the holiday’s. Be mindful of what you put in your body, (and don’t judge when you overindulge) - Enjoy. Every. Bite. Of. That. Pumpkin. Pie! Then, stay hydrated, move your body, and get as much sleep as possible.
Additionally think about taking an extra yoga class, then schedule yourself a massage or facial with your favorite therapist.
Most importantly, remember to HAVE FUN! It is so easy to get caught up in the hustle bustle of it all and loose sight of what really matters. This time of year is about BE-ing with your loved one’s - so be with them, and yourself, in a new way this year.

Mother Nature takes care of us in a very thoughtful way and the abundance of pumpkin at this time of year may not be simply coincidental.
Ilike Pumpkin is very rich in skin health boosting nutrients. The most important amongst them are the alpha and beta carotenes. Carotenes are the orange pigments in the vegetable that act as important anti-oxidants that boost immunity and slow the degenerative process of aging by protecting the cells from damage caused by free radicals. Beta carotenes generate Vitamin A in the body that ensures proper immune functions. Other vitamins pumpkins are rich in are Vitamin C and E, both with antioxidant functions to benefit tired, stressed skin. The vegetable also provides Vitamin B5 (Panthotenic Acid) that balances hormone levels and manages stress. Pumpkin is a good source of lutein, an antioxidant that absorbs blue light and protects from oxidative stress. Fatty acids, potassium, magnesium, zinc and iron are important nutrients that pumpkin provides the skin to balance fluid levels, soothe and soften the skin and help in the cell regenerating process. Pumpkin also has a relatively low pH that protects the skin from bacteria and infections.
Pumpkin is the main ingredient in the ilike Pumpkin & Orange Mask. We use cold processed, whole raw pumpkin pulp (instead of extracts) in order to retain the full benefit of the vegetable and keep all nutrients in the rawest form for better absorption.
The ilike organic skin care pumpkin products effectively:
Pumpkin also smooths the skin by promoting cell turnover, thus preventing the skin from getting dry, scaly or rough.
Vanilla, a scent familiar to many of us, is actually a very rare commodity. It is among the worlds most expensive spices, following closely behind saffron and cardamon.
Vanilla pods, commonly called vanilla beans, are the fruit of the vanilla orchid, the only orchid plant that produces an edible fruit.
Vanilla is known for being an powerful antioxidant, aphrodisiac, anticarcinogenic, and antidepressant. Ample evidence shows Vanilla plays a crucial roll in helping a variety of ailments and is valued as an anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory and for its general relaxing and calming effect on the brain and nerves, relieving anxiety and anger.
Both Pumpkin and Vanilla, ingredients highlighted in our November specials, restore balance, lift your mood, and nourish your body.

In less than 5 days, more than 20,000 eager runners, and thousands more of their supporters, will be participating in the Portland Marathon -- A marathon Runner’s World called “the best people’s marathon in the West.”
Runners have been preparing for this event for months. They work hard to stay hydrated, and they carefully plan their meals to ensure their bodies have the right fuel to get them through the race. They also log countless hours of training, and if time and resources permit, they get regular bodywork to support the repair and recovery of their muscles.
In an article on Active.com, Melissa Eisler speaks with massage therapist, Mary Owen, who likens getting bodywork while training, to the regular maintenance of your car. Mary says, "It's amazing how many athletes don't even think about getting bodywork, especially when they are in season. Regular maintenance is always recommended to athletes that are consistently overworking the same muscle groups. But during those tough parts of the year, when athletes are racing, competing and doing their most rigorous training, that's when it's most important."

Hal Higdon, a long time contributor to Runner's World, states that runners should take as much care in the recovery phase of training as they do in its preparation. He suggests including massage into your recovery regimen 28-48 hours after the race is completed. Read his post race recommendation here: Post-Marathon-Zero-Week-Training-Program
At Zama massage, our highly trained massage therapists are ready to assist you in your pre and post race care. We have created a special massage, The Weekend Warrior, designed specifically for you - athletes training for, or recovering from, the Portland Marathon, on October 6th, 2013.
Some benefits of massage can include:
Massage also has many powerful physiological effects such as decreasing heart rate and cortisol levels, resulting in overall feelings of relaxation, improved moods and lower rates of stress.

Boost your body's natural ability to heal itself with Cranio Sacral Therapy.
article by Lisa Mertz, LMT
CranioSacral Therapy is a light touch technique that can create dramatic change in your body and in your life. It frees the restrictions deep in the body that alleviate pain and dysfunction and allow for optimal wellness in the body and mind. By relaxing the tissues around the brain and spinal cord, the Central Nervous System is able to optimize the performance and function of every other system in the body.
The body is designed to heal itself. It is constantly monitoring a series of functions in order to be in a state of balance and perform however we need when we need it most.
Daily stresses and strains on the mind and body can cause tissues to tighten, creating tension around the brain and spinal cord. These stresses and strains can have a negative affect on the communication highway of the body and ultimately on one's health and well-being. CranioSacral Therapy releases those tensions to allow every part of the body to relax and regulate as it helps the body take better care of itself.
CranioSacral Therapy can help bring relief from many issues. Most commonly it is used when addressing headaches and migraines, neck and back pain, TMJ dysfunction, anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, fatigue, insomnia, PTSD, fibromyalgia, digestive issues and so much more. Additionally, clients often feel more energized, focused and driven after receiving this treatment.
CranioSacral Therapy provides a non-invasive approach to address tensions deep in the body and gives the body a relaxing environment to improve health and performance. Because of its gentle approach it is safe and effective on everyone from infants to seniors.
Come see Lisa at Zama for CranioSacral Therapy now through the end of 2010 for $15 off any and all CST sessions. (please mention this enewsletter to receive your discount.) For more information or to schedule an appointment call us at (503) 281-0278.

Pain from sitting all day? Get relief at Zama Massage.
article by Tate Barker, LMT
Many of today's jobs require people to work long hours at a desk and in front of a computer, and back pain is one of the most common health problems for people who spend a large portion of their day sitting down. Back pain often occurs from leaning forward and slouching, causing muscles to tighten and become fatigued.
I have been a Massage Therapist for nine years, and during that time I have gained a great deal of experience treating back pain. I customize my approach to treatment, focusing on muscles that need to be stretched or loosened to alleviate back pain.
Sitting down all day restricts the movement of the body, which increases the likelihood of pain and discomfort in the muscles and joints. The sitting position tightens muscles in the back, chest, glutes, upper legs, and abdomen. When sitting for long periods of time a person's legs are inactive, and that triggers shortening and tightening in the hamstrings. Tight hamstrings are known to cause strain in the lower back and hips, and that pain can then be referred to surrounding areas in the body such as the Piriformis muscle. The Piriformis muscle is deep in the hip, and when it starts to shorten it can irritate the sciatic nerve which then causes pain, tingling, and numbness down the leg and into the foot.
Good posture in the lower body comes from the abdominal and back muscles working in tandem. However, most people do not have strong enough abdominal muscles to help support their back muscles when they sit down all day, and this leads to pain and discomfort.
In the upper body, slouching and forward rotation of the shoulders results in pain in the back and chest muscles. The muscles shorten in the chest from computer work, typing and writing, and the motions of these activities make the upper body push forward, while the upper mid back pulls with it which causes weak muscles around the shoulder blades.
Headaches are a common cause of the 'forward head' position, which also causes many people to feel sharp and constant pain around their mid back (rhomboids). The neck, shoulders and upper back are also strained by 'forward chin' and the motion of stretching out towards the computer. Holding neck muscles in an overstretched position weakens them, as does stretching the back muscles like the rhomboids (shoulder blade area).
I have in-depth knowledge and experience working with clients who have back pain from sitting down all day. During a sixty to ninety minute session, I am able to loosen areas that are tight and stressed which provides comfort and pain relief to my clients. I use a variety of massage techniques such as deep tissue, swedish, and trigger point therapy, and I perform stretching therapy and give advice to clients about how they can use stretching techniques at work and home.

Clear Your Seasonal Allergies with Acupuncture
Spring is here, and with it warmer weather, beautiful flowers, and for many, allergies. Acupuncture is known for effectively treating pain, but did you know it is also good for treating seasonal allergies? Unlike prescription and over-the-counter medications, acupuncture and herbal medicine help the body return to a natural balance, clearing the underlying condition causing the allergies and improving overall health.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture has been used for more than 3000 years and is a part of the system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which also includes Tuina massage, Chinese herbal medicine, and Qigong, a form of meditative movement. Modern research has proven what ancient practitioners already seemed to know: that TCM works by removing blockages of the body's healing energy and stimulating what is now known as the immune system.
What else can Acupuncture treat?
Katelyn Decker, L.Ac., M.Ac.O.M. is our resident acupuncturist now practicing at Zama Massage Clinic. Acupuncture is great for treating pain, allergies and many disorders including sports injuries, insomnia, infertility and digestive complaints. Some of the other benefits include stress relief and relaxation, and a general feeling of well-being.
How does Acupuncture work?
When you come in for a treatment your acupuncturist Katelyn Decker will read your pulses, look at your tongue, and consult with you about your health. She then will be able to form a diagnosis and treatment plan specifically for you to treat your symptoms as well as the root cause. Sterile single-use needles about the width of a hair are inserted into the skin to encourage the free flow of the body's bio-electric energy. Each point has very specific functions in balancing the body and restoring the recipient to a state of natural health.
Those who try acupuncture for the first time are usually quite surprised by how relatively painless the experience is, and many individuals may take a nap while they are resting on the comfortable treatment table.
Leaving the clinic, patients often feel relaxed and happy. Treatments are cumulative, and your body learns to respond to the acupuncture more over time. Other treatment techniques sometimes used are Chinese medicinal herbs, dietary suggestions, tuina massage, reflexology and cupping. Many conditions are resolved after four to six visits, but some take longer.
Plus, from now until May 9, 2010, book an appointment with Katelyn and receive $20 off your first visit! Please use code kdlac20 when booking your appointment.

"Thanks again for the difference you made on my back! I'm almost 100% recovered now. I had tried all kinds of therapies, but there is something really special about your work and the combination of cupping and acupuncture that you did. I feel more aware now of what was causing the pain as well!"

As The Reclamation Project, I make art out of reclaimed materials in an attempt to save the universe one piece of art at a time. As I've progressed with my craft, I find myself influenced by Japanese and Chinese painting and woodblock design -- the spontaneity of Zen ink washes, the textures of Japanese woodblock prints, the inherent beauty in decay and weathering. For this collection I’ve carved slightly abstracted nature scenes and portraits of people from found photos on reclaimed wooden “canvases” in order to examine beauty in the inevitable processes of decay and rebirth, forgetting and discovery.
I got into art as a way to do social activism after years of working in non-profits. So I use the art as a focal point, a node of intersection, for messages of reuse, sustainability and community connection. I like to remind the audience where the materials come from in effort to show them that aesthetic beauty is everywhere, all materials can be shaped into art. And to that end, I show work at art fairs, coffee shops, boutiques, non-profit fundraisers and galleries throughout the Pacific Northwest so I can discuss these issues and themes with an ever-widening audience.

Zama Massage welcomes local artist Andy Bleiler for the next month.
View his paintings while waiting for your massage appointment or come on in during reception hours. You may also schedule a specific time with our receptionist to view the paintings.
Andy Bleiler, Regionalist artist
The work in this show represents my affinity for the landscape of the Pacific Northwest. The Columbia River basin is a very significant and historic place for many cultures, as well as being one of the most awe inspiring places on earth. My goal has been to capture the landscape as I see it, not only for you to enjoy today, but with the hope that future generations will be able to know what it looked like and be encouraged to preserve what remains of this beauty. I find my inspiration in the rich colors, vast spaces, and even the simple glances at the sky or the traditional places we visit each season. My wish is that you will give yourself permission to pause as you view the work, allowing yourself to be drawn into the space, appreciating the colors, scale, and quality of light represented in each one. Not only do my paintings aim to preserve the Northwest , but my habits as an artist do as well. I strive to reduce my footprint on the environment in many ways. By using a special water soluble oil paint, I avoid any of the destructive solvents in my studio, normally associated with oil painting. My canvases are either handmade using reclaimed wood, or by recycling discarded canvases. The frames used for some of the work are recycled or made from reclaimed lumber. Great care is used to ensure that as little waste as possible is generated in the creation of my work. Though working green has thankfully become a trend for many in recent days, I have seen the value of it for years. I have felt strongly that I should try to keep my impact low, not only as a socially responsible thing to do, but as a way to celebrate this beautiful world we share. My hope is that by supporting me as an artist, you will see that you are contributing to everyone's well being.
Payment arrangements can be made, to enable you to have the art for your walls that you desire, while staying within your monthly budget during these challenging times. To purchase work or inquire about commissions, please call Andy at: (360)-433-1203
